An example of our basic deck design is shown below. We include some things that others don't, like a 5/4" X 6" top railing board around the deck, which is quite useful for setting planters on. We also always install a 2" X 10" bandboard completely around the outside of the deck to hide the nail heads of the floor joists underneath. We also include 1 free set of steps into the yard and standard spindles of 2" X 2" pickets cut to fit under the railing instead of screwing them to the side. We use galvanized nails (unless otherwise requested) on all framing and flooring. We use galvanized screws for all railing installations around our decks.
